GSCL Inc to host 50 Plus T20 Cup Prime Minister’s T20 tourney set to commence on November 1

The Georgetown Softball Cricket League (GSCL) Inc will be hosting its inaugural 50 Plus T20 tournament at several venues in the city.

Regal Masters are the defending champions in the over- 45 segment

The tournament which is expected to start shortly will be played on a round robin basis, with no entrance fee required while trophies will be at stake. According to the organisers, the competition is a dress rehearsal for the Prime Minister’s T20 Cup which for the first time will include matches in this category, while Everest CC, GNIC SC and GYO are the venues listed to be used.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday, President of the GSCL Inc Ian John said the response from teams overseas for the upcoming Prime Minister’s T20 Cup has been good. He said that during the recently concluded New York Softball Cricket League Independence Cup, a number of teams from USA and Canada have indicated their willingness in journeying to Guyana for the Prime Minister’s T20 Cup which is set to commence on November 1 and conclude on November 3. He added that local teams are urged to secure their spots soonest since only the first eight teams that registered in each of the categories will be accepted.

John informed that the Prime Minister’s T20 will consists of three categories namely the over 45, over 50 and open and matches will be played at venues in Georgetown. For the over-50 division, three players at the age of 49 will be accepted.
John said that while no entrance fee is required for the Prime Minister’s T20, teams will be asked to make a deposit of $60,000 as collateral for their participation in the tournament which will be refunded after the preliminary round matches on the second day of the competition.
“This fee is a guarantee that the teams registered will be participating fully, we have had issues whereas teams that were listed on the fixtures, pulled out at the last moment and that caused some problems for us, since it is difficult to find a replacement at the last moment. This fee will be refunded following the preliminary games on Saturday (November 2), the second day of the tournament.”
The GSCL Inc head said that they will also be looking at match fixing seriously. “There are times when teams are tied on the same number of wins and the team with the superior run rate goes through to the semi finals. So there have been instances where teams fixed games to allow another team to go through, for instance the top two teams from each group go through to the semi finals, and the team at the bottom of the group fixed games to pave the way for another team, of their choice, entrance into the semis. This type of action will not be tolerated as there should be a level playing field for everyone and a committee will be set up to deal with these types of issues,” he stated.
John noted that both off-break and round arm bowling will be allowed, but chucking will not be accepted and the umpires will be very strict on this rule. “The tournament will be a lucrative one which included lots of giveaways for the fans during the finals and admission to the venue will be free.”
John indicated that teams will be required to submit an ID photo of their list of 15 players which will be used for a data base system of the players.
Off-field entertainment which included cheer leaders will be provided while live commentary will be done for the finals. Regal Masters and Speedboat are the defending champions in the over-45 and open categories respectively. Matches will be played with their stipulated time whereas the organisers will be very strict on teams turning up late for matches as well as time wasting.
Following the semi finals on November 2, the finals will be held on November 3 at Everest CC, commencing with the over-50 category from 10:00hrs, this will be followed by the over-45 final from 13:30hrs while the open final will be played under lights from 18:00hrs.
