Dear Editor:
Thank you for allowing me space in your fine publication to extend my congrats to Mr. Hydar Ally in not only recognizing, but shining a much needed light on a phenomenal act of honesty and integrity by a young Jamaican mother of two. Not only did Mr. Ally take the time to highlight this young woman’s story, but the fact that she is not Guyanese is even more heart warming. Ackaisha Green is a 24 year old single mother of two who had to borrow money from her mother to get her son to school. That very day she entered a bank in Kingston Jamaica and stumbled upon a plastic bag stuffed with visible $1.000 and $5.000 dollar bills. “Me coulda take it weh, but me neva take it weh.” What did this broke jobless mother of two do? She picked up the bag and handed it over to two police officers. A short time later, a frantic armor truck employee rushed into the bank in search of the money said to be in the millions he had forgotten in the bank. The moral of this story, the lessons are many, honesty, integrity, self respect, judgement, conscience, self worth etc, etc, etc. I’ve read a long time ago to “Never look down on a man/woman, unless you are picking them up”. Who would have believed this young woman with limited education ( she tried twice to get back to school ) two mouths to feed, no job, would be capable of such a monumental act of honesty? Her mother berated her, called her foolish and lamented the fact that her daughter borrowed money that very same morning from her. Even though this young woman had applied to two different training programs and rejected, she had no idea where the funds were coming from if accepted. It is my hope that the enormity of her act is not lost on our society from the very top to the bottom. There is nothing about this young woman that points to her magnificent integrity, Black, limited education, from a depressed community in Kingston no job but yet made most of us look like second rate humans by her act of honesty. In closing, her honesty paid off she was granted tuition free training to complete level 1 and 2 of the “Learning for Early Activity Program”
(LEAP) and selected to be its first youth Ambassador where she will be asked to speak to other young job aspirants. In addition Ms. Green has been showered with gifts from home in Jamaica and the diaspora. As we look in the mirror and ask ourselves that question, “What would I have done if standing in her shoe?” Never judge a book by its cover.
WHAT A STELLAR EXAMPLE OF A HUMAN BEING! Thank you Mr. Ally for not allowing me to drop the ball on Ms. Ackaisha Green.
Respectfully
Claudeston Massiah
