Athletes which were part of Guyana’s recording breaking haul at the recently concluded Carifta games that were held in the Grand Cayman Islands, dominated the first day of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) Youth and Junior Championships, which sprinted off yesterday at the National Track and Field Centre (NTFC) and will conclude today.

Akeem Stuart wins ahead of Rupert Perry and Leslain Baird in the men’s open 100m invitational yesterday.
Shaquka Tyrell, Princess Browne, Adriel Austin and Keliza Smith, all of who participated in the 48th edition of the Caribbean Free Trade Association (Carifta) games this year, had standout performances.
Tyrell, who won a bronze at Carifta, won the girls’ U-17 1500m in five minutes three seconds ahead of Kissanna Glen (5minutes 10 seconds) and Naomi Paddy (5minutes 40second). Another bronze medalist in the Cayman Islands, Browne, leaped 11.57m to win the Girls U-17 triple jump event yesterday at the Leonora, West Coast Demerara facility.
Carifta middle distance bronze medalist, Austin, did well in the quarter mile sprint to finish second to Smith who won the event in 57.27s.
Also in the winners’ row yesterday w Daniel Williams- U20 100m (10.68s), Daniel Melville- U-20 400m (49.81s), Kenisha Phillips- U20 100 (11.83s) and Deshanna Skeete- U-20 100m (11.84s).
Anisha Gibbons (U-17 javelin) and Matthew Gordon (U-17 3000m) who both won gold at the Carifta games along with Austin (U-17 800m), will be a part of the today’s final action.
