“They can write and say what they want, I’m coming out of here and I don’t care.” These were the words of Revelana Smith who was charged for the attempted murder of her child father’s girlfriend. The victim is said to be a police woman.
Smith, who appeared to be very unremorseful for her alleged actions, was arraigned in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before the Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan where the charge was read to her.
The accused, called ‘Ducky’, was not required to plead to the indictable offence which stated that on March 26, last, at Pike Street Kitty, Georgetown; she wounded Renetta Bharrat with intent to commit murder.
‘Ducky’ walked into the courtroom of the Chief Magistrate chewing a gum and was adorned in an all over black tight fitted short jumpsuit. She carelessly sat in the prisoners dock to await her matter.
When the matter was called, Smith asked the magistrate to stand down the matter until her attorney arrived.
After this was granted, she was taken back in the prisoner’s chute where she was given a pair of jeans and asked to get rid of the gum.
Attorney-at-law Adrian Thompson represented the accused and entered an application for reasonable bail to be granted.
He told the court that Smith is 25 years old and resides at Lot 88 William Street, Kitty, Georgetown. He went on to say that she is a mother of a seven-year-old and that the child’s father is now in a relationship with the victim.
The attorney is contending that the only wound is to the victim’s right arm and is not life threatening. He suggested that the charge should be for wounding. However, because the victim is a member of the police force the charge was made up for attempted murder, he said.
But police prosecutor Neville Jeffers objected to bail based on the seriousness and nature of the offence. He further stated that Smith went into hiding after the incident and based on information received, they were able to apprehend her in Sophia.
Prosecutor Jeffers said that according to the medical report for Bharrat, her right index finger was severed about halfway. She received several chops about her body, including a wound to the head.
According to reports, on the day in question, Bharrat went to meet her boyfriend in Kitty and upon arrival, Smith showed up in a taxi.
The accused, who was allegedly armed with a cutlass started to chop the victim several times about the body before making good her escape. Bharrat was assisted by public-spirited persons to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where she was admitted as a patient.
After listening to both sides, Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan remanded Smith to prison and adjourned the matter until April 24, next.
As Smith was escorted out of the courtroom, she ‘high-fived’ a relative and stated, “They can write and say what they want, I’m coming out of here and I don’t care.”
