(Kaieteur News) – A Trans Guyana Airways aircraft was damaged after it was involved in a runway collision with a herd of capybara moments after it landed at the Eugene F. Correia International Airport at Ogle on Tuesday evening.
Communications and Public Relations (PR) Consultant for the airport, Kit Nascimento told this newspaper via telephone that the Beechcraft 1900 bearing registration 8R-GAQ had just arrived from Suriname. He said the aircraft was transporting 12 passengers and two crew members when it struck a herd of capybara after it touched down at the runway shortly after 18:00 hours.
“The aircraft was already on the land, completing its landing when it came into collision with a herd of capybaras crossing the runway. The pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft, but the landing gear at the front of the aircraft was badly damaged. He said when the collision took place, the captain shut down the engines immediately to maintain control of the aircraft which came off the runway but remained stable,” he said.
He explained that the passengers were deplaned immediately and all emergency vehicles were deployed.
“No injuries were reported.”
According to Nascimento, in recent times the airport has been experiencing problems with an invasion of wild animals.
“The problem of capybaras and other wild animals is a relatively new one. (These) animals have been invading the airport, resulting largely from the massive road construction that has been taking place around the airport, driving these animals out of their natural habitat. We’ve not only had capybaras, we’ve had caiman on the runway.”
The communications specialist said that the authorities are aware of the problem.
“Well…the government authorities are well aware of this problem. We do our best to make sure that the runways are clear prior to touch down and but this happened, and I want to stress this, when the plane had already touched down, when the capybaras invaded, it was a herd of them,” he said.
