With the West Demerara and Berbice zones already completed, lovers of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Competition will now have the opportunity to place their focus on the East Coast zone which opens this evening, at the Haslington Market Tarmac.
Headlining the night’s round of matches will be defending champions Uprising, who made history by becoming the first qualifier to win the zone, while the host village will be represented by Hypers.
The champs will face Non Pariel in the final of eight games scheduled for the evening, the Hypers take on the usually tough Buxton Diamond in the penultimate game of the night. Some of the other big name teams that will appear on the night include Melanie ‘A’ and ‘B’, Victoria Church Yard, Plaisance ‘A’ and Beterverwagting ‘A’ and ‘B’.
The tournament which has enjoyed overwhelming success over the past decade has grown into what can safely be labeled the most popular competition in the shorter version. It has grown both in terms of community and crowd support and these two indisputable features are anticipated to be on show once the tournament kicks off.
The East Coast Zone has enjoyed support from as far as West Berbice and while fans from the outlying villages travel to East Berbice to witness their teams play, they tend to also make the pilgrimage down the East Coast to witness the high quality and rivalry that is usually on display.
The Uprising unit that won last year’s tournament was one laden with young fearless players, who were hungry for success, but now that may feel what it is like to be the hunted as teams have already signaled their intentions to exact revenge this time around.
However, the champs vow to successfully defend their title so immediately fans can anticipate three nights of exciting encounters that could also see turnout surpass previous years. The Organisers have already indicated that fans and the community will be the real winners of this year’s competition with giveaways planned for each night activity.
Play in the competition continues tomorrow evening, at the same venue with the final set for April 22. The night’s fixtures are seen below:
[1] Mahaica Determinators vs Liliendaal Hustlers-‘A’; [2] Melanie-‘B’ vs GWI East Coast-‘A’; [3] Belfield Warriors vs BV ‘B’; [4] Paradise-‘A’ vs Victoria-‘B’; [5] BV-‘A’ vs Plaisance-‘B’; [6] Victoria Church Yard vs Melanie-‘A’; [7] Buxton Diamond vs Haslington Hypers-‘A’; [8] Uprising vs Non-Pariel-‘B’.
