Raphael Edmond, 50, was on Monday brought before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where he answered to two charges of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
The accused, who is a miner and hails from Stronghold Canal, Pomeroon River, entered not guilty pleas to the charges after they were read to him.
It is alleged that on March 22, last, at Kupang Backdam, Cuyuni River, he had in his possession 29 live rounds of ammunition.
Also it was alleged that on the same date and location, he had in his possession one shotgun.
Police prosecutor Gordon Mansfield had no objection to bail, and same was granted in the sum of $70,000. The matter was adjourned until April 17, at the Bartica Magistrates’ Courts.
According to reports, on the day in question, police acting on information received went to the location mentioned in the charge – the mining camp at which the defendant operates – and a search was conducted.
The search revealed the illegal gun and ammunition. Edmond was taken into police custody and was later charged.
