IDB loan to fund six new primary schools

(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Education will be using part of an Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) loan to finance the geotechnical and topographical survey for six new primary schools in Regions One, Two, Four, Five, Six, and 10.

This is according to a request for Expressions of Interest published in Sunday’s Kaieteur News.

The education ministry in the advertisement stated that the Government of Guyana has received financing from the IDB toward the cost of the “Support for Education Recovery and Transformation” and intends to apply part for consulting services.

The IDB had approved the financing of US$90 million towards the Support for Educational Recovery and Transformation project back in 2023.

This publication reported at the time, that the loan Guyana borrowed was designed to expand access to safe and improved learning environments and enhance educational services for vulnerable students in Guyana, the IDB said in a press release.

The ministry is seeking geotechnical and topographical survey for new school sites for the Parakeese Primary School in Region One; Suddie Primary School in Region Two; Cummings Lodge in Region Four; Experiment Primary School in Region Five; Chesney Primary School in Region Six; and Sand Hill Primary School in Region 10.

The notice states that the consulting services include: conduct a geotechnical site investigation inclusive of boreholes, laboratory testing and field surveys; produce a soils investigation report summarising the findings and recommendations of the geotechnical investigation; and use the report as the basis the necessary data needed for structural design, focusing on a proposed foundation design to determine code compliance and acceptability for each of the proposed sites.

Additionally, the document noted that the consulting firm will conduct a topographical survey of the floor plan and provide recommendations if the land is suitable for its intended purpose.

Further, the ministry detailed that the estimated implementation period is six weeks.

Bids for the project are expected to be opened at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office on May 28, 2026.

Kaieteur News reported last month, that the ministry announced plans to build a primary school at Parakeese Village. The new state-of-the-art facility will be designed for 200 children from the mainland and surrounding islands.

“The project, one of six funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), aims to eliminate the daily hardships faced by local pupils who must currently endure arduous commutes by road or boat to reach Kamwatta Primary School. By bringing high-quality facilities directly to the community, the ministry is decentralising educational resources to ensure that geography never dictates a child’s potential,” the ministry reported in April.

Further, the ministry said that this move underscores the government’s commitment to equitable education, proving that access to a modern learning environment is a right for every student, regardless of their location.

Earlier this month, the Regional Democratic Council of Region Five held a stakeholder engagement with residents to discuss the proposed construction of a primary school at Experiment and its anticipated impact on the community.

“The consultation aims to provide important project details, facilitate community feedback, and address social and environmental considerations associated with the development. The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen and expand educational infrastructure within Region No. 5, while ensuring that Residents and Stakeholders are actively involved in the consultation process,” the RDC stated in a Facebook post.

In April, the Regional Administration of Region Two also held a consultation with residents and stakeholders for the new Suddie Primary School which will be located at Onderneeming.
