The Guyana Diabetic Association is seeking to ensure that persons with diabetes manage their condition better.
Exercise will be a big feature.
President of GDA, Glynis Beaton highlighted some major events that are planned as part of their aims for 2019.
“In bringing more awareness so that there can be better management of diabetes, we are providing a whole host of events.”
The first event is called, ‘Eating with music’. This allows persons to eat and exercise at the same time through dancing. Blood testing will be done before and after the event so as to analyze the effect.
“We are looking to see what effect exercise has on diabetics. Therefore, low-carb foods will be provided and lots of music for dancing.” Beaton mentioned.
Another exceptional event Ms. Beaton highlighted will be the aqua-aerobics. “This is an event, which we have put into consideration from one of our international sister organization. It involves exercising in the water.”
GDA is hoping to have this initiative pulled off some time in August. If proven successful, they will be hosting it once per month.
A regional camp will also be held for persons living with type 1 diabetes during the July-August school holiday. Adults and children will meet with persons living with the condition and have an opportunity to experience their life, living as a diabetic on the camp.
Ms. Beaton mentioned that, “On this camp, everyone will have the experience in living with type 1 diabetes. Persons will be opened up to knowledge based on how to properly manage the condition.”
The event will also see an individual with the condition from sister organizations internationally visiting Guyana and vice-versa.
The president reiterated the importance for everyone to be educated about diabetes, since it can happen to anyone and the pain it leaves is by far what anyone would like to experience.
“I would like for everyone to understand the importance of this and take a stand because anyone of us can lose someone to this dreaded condition. I lost my mom to it so I know and understand the feeling.”
