‘We have to do this more often!’…Commander Linden Lord
Commander of E Division, Linden Lord, and a team, including members of the Wisroc Police youth group did a walk about in Block 22, yesterday. They interacted with residents and shared out a few food hampers.
The Commander said that the walk about was long overdue and that it was the first to be done in the community.
“I plan to visit here more often, and not only here, but other areas as well.
“It is a way to build a relationship between the community and the police, allowing residents to see the police as their friend and not their enemy, so these interactions are about building trust with the community,” Lord said.
He expressed optimism in that regard given the response from residents.
Hampers packed with food stuff were donated to three deserving families. The recipients thanked the Commander and team and praised the initiative.
President of the Wisroc Police youth group, Shaquille Austin, who helped to coordinate the activity, said that the group is continuously seeking for things to do that would benefit residents.
“We are presently working to resuscitate the group which has been dormant for a little while.
However we are actively pursuing economic activities that can benefit the youths here and keep them away from negative pursuits, ” Austin said.
One of the ventures that the youths are involved in is the manufacturing of local seasoning pepper sauce.
Police Segeant Lyndon Barkoye, who is in charge of the Wisroc Police outpost posited, “Over the past couple of years we came to realise that the trust between the police and the community had eroded somewhat, so we decided to engage youths and involve them in certain activities that would keep them away from crime”.
Approximately twenty five youths currently make up the Wisroc Police Youth Group.
Sargeant Barkoye explained that the group is financed through fund activities, with some assistance from Commander Linden Lord and others.
Commander Lord praised the activities of the youth group, positing that the results from same could only be positive.
Assistant Superintendent of Police, Peters-Fernandes, which functions as the Community relations officer also commended the youth group.
She indicated that in her capacity she also derived tremendous pleasure from interacting with the community and especially putting together hampers for those deserving of such.
“I enjoy this so much, when we give we get more, and the business persons in the community are always willing to come onboard with us.”
Peters-Fernandes said that she especially loved to assist in equipping students for school at the beginning of the school term.
That initiative she said, receives tremendous support from the business community.
