Guyana’s male and female hockey teams are scheduled to visit Canada in March 2019, a move which will ensure the continuity of the sport’s development in Guyana.
This disclosure was made by President of the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB), Philip Fernandes at the conclusion of this year’s Diamond Mineral Water Indoor Hockey Festival, earlier in the month.
“This is our last event (Diamond Mineral Water Indoor Hockey Festival) for 2018 and going into next year, we’ve been invited by Canada to bring a men’s and women’s senior indoor hockey national teams to compete against Canada and Belarus on the women’s side and on the men’s side, it’s against Canada and Russia in tri-nation tournament so the focus now is on that to see if we can get it done,” Fernandes explained.
His comments came on the heels of Guyana’s strong showing in this year’s indoor hockey festival where eventual Champions Pepsi Hikers dethroned Trinidad’s Queens Park to take their eighth title in the event.
However, the hockey calendar gets underway as early as next week with Old Fort Hockey Club (OFHC) set to field a Veteran and a female side in next month’s Ventures Hockey Club invitational in the twin island republic of Trinidad & Tobago (T&T) from January 3rd to 6th.
Joining OFHC will be a National development team that is being prepared under the watchful eyes of National Men’s coach, Robert Fernandes, who is currently in the process of developing the next batch of players to succeed at the senior level.
Fernandes noted to Kaieteur Sport that his 12-man team consists of under-19 players with the exception of Jamarj Assanah who will serve as the captain during their extended tour which will end on the 16th.
“After Ventures’ senior indoor tournament, we will play in the UWI (University of the West Indies) invitational and we are looking forward to having as much playing time on the artificial turf so we will also train between the competition days”, Fernandes noted.
The national development squad reads: Omar Hopkinson, Warren Williams, Nandallal Persaud, Paul D’Andrade, Kareem McKenzie, Meshach Sargeant, Samuel Woodroffe, Tiversarid Garnett, Shomere Garnett, Nikel Ashby, Shakeem Fausette and Jamarj Assanah (skipper).

Men’s Coach Robert Fernandes gives instructions to Midfielder Kareem Mackenzie during CAC qualifiers in Jamaica this year.
