No confidence motion was Jagdeo’s attempt to stay relevant – Ramjattan …says PPP should have named Presidential Candidate by now

Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan, categorized the No Confidence Motion as part of the plan by the Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo, to remain relevant at a time when the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) should have selected its presidential candidate for the 2020 General Elections.
The Motion which was tabled by Jagdeo saw robust debate in the House.
“The discussion here, then, is obviously just what it is to show the relevance of the PPP at this point in time and especially, the mover of the Motion [Jagdeo],” Ramjattan stated.
The Public Security Minister indicated that by this time, the Party should have named a Presidential Candidate to lead the party into the upcoming elections.
According to Ramjattan, naming the candidate would have seen Jagdeo moving out because he has to make space for the new leader.
“But he wants to be the only dinosaur,” Ramjattan stated, noting that he does not want to give any bright young candidate a chance such as Charles Ramson.
Ramjattan stated that some of the top candidates loved by the party and who are frontrunners to be the Presidential Candidate did not speak on the No Confidence Motion. He singled out Dr. Frank Anthony and Dr. Vindhya Persaud.

Ramjattan stated that the Government is not clueless and without vision.
“We are here (in Government) and were elected for five years. You were elected to be over there (In opposition) for five years. And that is only in the first instance,” Ramjattan.
He cautioned the Opposition not to juxtapose the fact that “you did well at the Local Government Elections that the Government will do badly at the Regional and General Elections.”
Addressing crime issues, the Public Security Minister stated that the Government ensured that the U.S Drug Enforcement Agency was established along with British Security Sector Reform Adviser, Russell Combe.
He said that Guyana’s relationship with INTERPOL and other police forces have improved to the extent that piracy attacks along the Corentyne Coast have declined.
Ramjattan appealed for the Opposition and the Government to work together. He noted that while the two sides will disagree on principles, they must know when the line should not be crossed.
“More and more I feel that because of this polarizing atmosphere that we have that is going to be taken advantage of with a No Confidence Motion, especially in the context when they know that they don’t have the numbers,” Ramjattan stated.
The Public Security Minister said that he is hoping for mutual toleration, noting that the rivalries will be there, but they must not create a subversion of the Constitution and democracy.
“We do not want an extreme partisanship in this country, but the Opposition is trying to edge us there. That is wrong. That is wholly wrong. We are getting so deeply divided. We must still as responsible leaders inside of this House and outside of this House, make sure that we do not cross that line. We have to step back,” Ramjattan indicated.
