A speeding driver who knocked down a well-known Berbice pastor and escaped was subsequently found imbibing at a popular bar in New Amsterdam.
Pastor Cecil B Agard, 76, who is the founder of the Faith Deliverance Tabernacle Church at 73 Nurseville/ Tucber Park Housing Scheme, New Amsterdam, was on his way home after praying for some believers in the neighbouring East Canje area.
The accident occurred around 20:00 hrs on the Sheet Anchor Public Road, East Canje. According to eye witnesses, Pastor Agard was riding motorcycle CF 9858. Motor Car PPP 2518 was driven by Gavin Saunders of Philadelphia Street, New Amsterdam. Both were heading towards New Amsterdam .
In trying to pass the motorcycle the left side of the heavily tinted motor car which was reportedly going at great speed collided with the motor cycle.
The impact threw Pastor Agard off the motorcycle crushing his right leg in the process. As the bleeding pastor who has been on the pulpit for aver 60 years lay injured on the ground, the vehicle turned off its light and accelerated from the accident scene.
Agard was picked up by residents and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital. He was admitted for emergency treatment and underwent more than four hours of surgery.
His leg was broken in four places; he also suffered injuries to his back and head.
In the meanwhile residents had noticed the vehicle and gave its description to relatives and the police. The car was subsequently located some hours later parked at a popular night spot in the town.
The driver was imbibing and some women were in the car. The driver who claimed not to remember what occurred and denied hitting any one initially resisted arrest and police reinforcement had to be summoned.
A breathalyzer test was conducted on him and he was fund to be way over the legal limit.
Search of the vehicle unearthed a quantity of marijuana, a bottle of rum and a cutlass among other things.
Saunders remains in custody and the vehicle has been detained.
Investigations are continuing and the accused is expected to be slapped with several charges.
