High Court Judge Sandil Kissoon ordered Princess Hotel of Providence, East Bank Demerara, to pay damages to the tune of $7.5M to Marcia Duke, the mother of 17-year-old Shamar Edwards, who drowned in the hotel’s pool. The judgment was handed down yesterday at the High Court in Georgetown.
In her lawsuit, filed by Attorney-at-law Nigel Hughes, the mother contended that at the time of the incident, no lifeguard was around, which amounted to negligence on the hotel’s part.
Reports indicate that Edwards had graduated a month prior to his death.
According to reports, Edwards, of East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, and a sixth form student at St. Stanislaus College, was found unconscious in the pool. He was rushed to the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. This was on January 25, 2014.
It was further reported that a taxi had to transport the teen to the hospital after attempts to get an ambulance were futile. The judge ordered that damages be paid to the mother at a rate of 6% from the date of filing of the lawsuit to the date of judgment, and thereafter at a rate of 4% per annum until the sum is fully paid.
