A magnificent 118 by Jaguars Skipper Leon Johnson, a carefully constructed 65 by Tagenarine Chanderpaul and a five-wicket haul from left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul highlighted the truncated final day’s play of the last three-day practice match ended in a draw at Providence yesterday.
The 31-year-old Johnson, who has played nine Tests and six ODIs, reached the boundary 21 times and added 149 with Chanderpaul whose patient half century included five fours and a six, but teenager Kevlon Anderson, who hit three boundaries, was the only other batsman to get to 15 as Johnson’s X1 reached 241-7 from 70.2 overs on a flat track, replying to Vishaul Singh’s X1’s 153 all out.
The final day began with Johnson’s X1 on 104-1 with the Skipper on 56 and Chanderpaul on 41 after they had joined forces on 11-1 when Trevon Griffith (9) was bowled by pacer Romario Shepherd on Thursday.
In bright sunshine, the left-handed pair extended their partnership with Chanderpaul, who has one century and six fifties from his 25 First-Class games, playing the supporting role as he reached his fifty.
Conditions became overcast and a shower stopped at 11:00hrs and after a 20-minute delay play resumed and Chanderpaul, the 22-year-old son of former West Indies Captain Shiv
Chanderpaul, provided Permaul with his first of five wickets in the day to leave the score on 160-2.
Akshaya Persaud was bowled for a first-ball duck without addition to the score and Permaul who has 18 wickets from his six Tests, was on a hat-trick.
Chris Barnwell averted the hat-trick and stroked Renaldo Ali-Mohammed down the ground for four but was soon caught at slip by Rajendra Chandrika for 10 after pushing forward to the 29-year-old Permaul at 199-4.
Johnson, with four consecutive Regional First-Class titles to his name as Jaguars Captain, swept Permaul for successive boundaries before reverse sweeping the Berbician who has 444 First-Class wickets from 103 matches, for four more as his attractive innings flourished.
Johnson gave himself room and elegantly cut Jamaican off-spinner behind point for consecutive fours and along with the tremendously talented Anderson continued to bat in positive fashion on fast outfield despite the rain.
Johnson reached his century while Berbician Anderson stroked pacer Keon Joseph, who bowled with plenty of pace, gloriously past cover and neatly flicked him for boundaries before delicately sweeping Permaul for four.
But Joseph, whose career has been curtailed by injury, produced a perfect leg cutter which Anderson (15) pushed at and was caught behind at 233-5.
Johnson, arguable the best Captain in the Region, continued to look in top form which would enhance his chances of a Test recall and possible Captain if he takes it into the first two games this month in St Lucia and Antigua.
Johnson was eventually LBW to the probing Permaul who bowled Kemol Savory (7) nine runs later to leave the score on 241-7 before game was called off with Pestano unbeaten on two.
