Sixty-four year-old Seeram Seecharran of 16 Herstelling, East Bank Demerara (EBD), is now dead after being hit by a container truck yesterday morning at Rahaman Park, Houston, EBD, just in the vicinity of where the Christmas tree is erected on a yearly basis. The accident occurred around 08:45hrs.
Seecharran was said to have ridden his bicycle into the path of the container truck, which was being driven by a 24-year-old man from Hope West, Enmore, East Coast Demerara. In an attempt to avoid a collision with Seecharran, the driver reportedly applied brakes, causing the truck that was pulling a trailer with a container at the time, to run off the road and crash through the protective fence that surrounds the aforementioned Christmas tree. When the truck came to a halt, Seecharran was lying semi-conscious under the trailer and his bicycle was crushed under two of the truck’s wheels.
Video footage of what transpired just after the accident shows a number of people at the scene and even a few who wanted to render assistance, but were told by others to leave Seecharran until the ambulance came. On the recording, two individuals could also be heard saying, “the man ride over the road just so budday.” Police in a statement issued, claimed that have been unable to get any witnesses to come forward so far.
Seecharran could be seen breathing heavily as he lay stretched out under the truck. He was then taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead after being examined by a doctor.
According to the police statement, “the accident occurred around 08:45 hours, and about 08:47 hours, it was reported. Traffic ranks visited the scene and statements were taken. A breathalyzer test was also conducted on the driver of the motor lorry, which revealed a Blood Alcohol Concentration of .000 %.”
The driver is in custody assisting with investigation, and further enquiries are ongoing.
