On a night which produced some exciting cricket at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC), Tropical Spring Transport Sports Club defeated the home team by one run to win the final of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA)/ V Net Communications U13 25-over competition.
Tropical Spring Transport SC posted a competitive 257-3 off their allocation of 25 overs following their insertion. Alvin Mohabir who added 14 for last wicket stand with Tariq Walters (00*) who made 14, while Riyad Latif contributed 12 as Myem Khan claimed 2-13 and Romeo Deonarain 1-8.
DCC were restricted for 256-9 in reply. Tropical Spring Transport SC bowlers picked up wickets at regular intervals despite the runs keep flowing and it came down to the final over where the home team needed 10 to win. However, the pair of Wavell Allen and Myem Khan (08) who posted 21 for the last
wicket; their team’s best partnership, could only muster nine off spinner Sachin Persaud. Allen and Gabriel Roothkhan were joint top scorers with 13 each as Riyad Latif picked 2-7, Dave Mohabir 2-9 and Reyaz Latif 2-10.
R. Geenarine of DCC (4-6 versus Bel Air) took the award for the best bowling performance in the competition, Alvin Mohabir (64 vs Georgetown Cricket Club) grabbed the prize for the best batting
performance, Wavell Allen (nine wickets at 3.8) was the competition’s best bowler, Jonathan Van Lange of GCC (111 runs at an average of 27.75) took the best batsman accolade and Mohabir (112 runs at an average of 22.4 and six wickets at 4.2) was the tournament’s best all-rounder. Mohabir got the best batsman of the final trophy, Riyad Latif took the prize for the best bowling performance, the best fielder was Mohabir and the MVP was Riyad Latif. Members of both teams were presented with medals. The competition was co-sponsored by ECO Atlantic, Guyana Trading Company and Cerulean Inc.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, President of the GCA and former West Indies all-rounder Roger Harper expressed gratitude to the sponsors and congratulated the teams. He also thanked the Guyana Floodlights Softball Cricket Association for granting the players an opportunity to play under lights and
DCC for hosting the game.
Harper added that the main purpose of structuring the tournament in such a way was to ensure that each person that played got an fair opportunity to showcase their talent.
The rules of the competition stated that each team shall commence their innings with 200 runs and 10 runs shall be deducted to each wicket that falls. Two runs shall be credited to the batting team for each no ball and wide with no balls and wides having to be re-bowled only in the final over. The batsmen shall bat in pairs for a block of five overs.
