The teenager accused of murdering a 30-year-old labourer of Auchlyne Village, Corentyne, Berbice was today sent to the Juvenile Delinquent Centre in Essequibo for the crime he committed.
The teen, also of Auchlyne Village, yesterday appeared at the Springlands Magistrate Court before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh to answer to the capital offence of murder. He allegedly killed Desmond Sewdath. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge. He was unrepresented.
He is expected to return to court on December 4, 2018 when the matter continues.
Sewdath was dealt a single stab to the heart that resulted in shock and haemorrhage based on a post mortem report. He was stabbed by the teenager after an argument erupted between the two at a nearby shop.
They were both under the influence at the time of the incident. Welch reportedly escaped after committing the act but was shortly after handed over to the police by his mother.
Brother of the deceased, Tony Sewdath, had stated that he last saw his brother at Auchlyne village with some of his friends including the teenager before he left to go fishing, around 14:45 hrs, they were imbibing. The teenager, he said, had a knife with him “breaking ice” but he was worried since according to him, his now dead brother and the suspect had argued a few weeks ago and the teenager had threatened to stab him. “I tell him to come out the shop and go home but he na listen, so come I go away to back dam to fish”, he added.
A half hour later after returning from the back dam, a cousin met him along the public road and informed him that his brother was killed. He revealed that the teenager who is known to “smoke up” appeared to be under the influence of the drug at the time while he was at the shop.
Sewdath was reportedly threatened weeks ago by the teenager during an argument. The teen reportedly told the now deceased Sewdath that he would stab him.
