The first night of quarterfinal action in the second annual Turbo football tournament was nothing short of drama with Northern Rangers edging Riddim Squad 3-2 in the first match before the feature clash between Police FC and Santos was abandoned in the 90th minute with the score locked 2-2.
Last year’s losing finalists, Police FC had opened the scoring in the 19th minute of the clash against city side Santos through Dextroy Adams but after being restricted throughout the first half, the Policemen could not stop the potent attacking threat of Santos that came from behind to lead 2-1 by the 73 minute. Second half goals from Santos’ Lionel Holder (61st minute) and Keith Cairn (73rd minute) accounted for the spirited comeback but the lawmen were determined to not go down without a fight and in the 90th minute, the ever reliable Manasseh Primo scored the equaliser.
According to the referees’ report, it was at that point when an alleged armed Police FC supporter fired a shot into the sky, prompting the match officials to blow the game off prematurely.
Sources close to the organisers have shared with Kaieteur Sport that Police FC may be disqualified due to the incident while a release from the entity, Petra Organisation, has noted that they will be using the referees’ report to seek clarification on the issue and will be seeking guidance from the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) in resolving the matter but at the end of the day, football must be the winner.
In the opening match, two second half goals from 16-year-old right winger Stephon Reynolds (60th & 81st minutes) ensured that Northern Rangers remained in the hunt for the $800,000 first place cash prize after coming from behind twice to beat Mocha Arcadia’s Riddim Squad.
Rolex Smith (5th) and Wendell Joseph (48th) gave the East Bank Demerara based club the lead twice before Rangers’ Skipper Nigel Denny 27th and Reynolds had equalised and with eight minutes of normal time remaining in the contest, Reynolds fired home a successful shot to ascend his team into the semifinals.
The tournament which will see a total of $1.5 million in cash prizes up for grabs with the winners with the runners up taking $400,000, third $200,000 and fourth $100,000, will continue this Wednesday at the host venue, the Ministry of Education (MOE) ground on Carifesta Avenue.
