‘Impact Justice’, a Canadian-funded project is set to host another series of workshops aimed at helping teacher and guidance counselors implement alternative dispute resolution techniques in schools.
The seminars are a continuation of the training held in Guyana earlier this year, where local educators were exposed to a two-day training exercise on techniques used to address the incidence of violence in schools.
This time around, facilitators of the programme will include two of the 17 persons being trained as trainers.
The Restorative Practices Workshop will be conducted under the guidance of Ms. Patricia Lewis, Trainer, International Institute for Restorative Practices. Other contributors will include Dr. Andrew Hicks, Criminologist, University of Guyana and Ms. Terry-Ann Marsh, Lecturer in Teacher Education, Antigua State College.
The workshop will commence with a brief opening ceremony on November 8, at which Professor Velma Newton, Regional Project Director of the IMPACT Justice Project and Ingrid Trotman, Deputy Chief Education Officer (ag) will give remarks.
Impact Justice has as its ultimate objective the improvement of access to justice benefiting men, women, boy, girls, youth and businesses across the 13 CARICOM countries in which the Project is being implemented.
One of the ways the Project has sought to reach this objective is through the promotion of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) techniques to assist persons in resolving their disputes. One of the ADR mechanisms focused on by the project is Restorative Practices, which has been proven to be effective in addressing instances of violence and conflict within schools.
Between 2014 and 2018, Impact Justice has sponsored training in Restorative Practices in 9 of the 13 CARICOM Member States in which the Project is being implemented and hundreds of principals, deputy principals, guidance counsellors, teachers, education officers and parents have been certified as restorative practitioners.
From the group of persons trained, Impact Justice selected 17 persons from across the region to be trained as Restorative Practices Trainers.
