All roads leads to the National Park’s tarmac tomorrow for the culmination of what promises to a competitive day of the Ministry of Agriculture ‘Agriculture month’s’ Sports Day from 12 noon.
October each year is designated Agriculture Month and the Ministry’s Sports Day is one of the activities that are observed in October but because the Sports Day is held on a Friday this year the finals also will take place tomorrow.
The preliminary games where already contested and only the finals in Cricket, Football, Basketball, Dominoes and Card Games would be played tomorrow.
Novelty games like Beer drinking, Shandy drinking, Buns eating, Three-legged race, Sack Race, Lime and Spoon Race will also make up the day’s activities.
There will also be a 100 meters race for male and female Heads of departments.
The day’s proceedings will commence with the singing of the National Anthem and a Prayer before the opening remarks will be done by Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Miss Delma Nedd.
There will be a March Past from the players of all the agencies before the Torch is lit by Director of Sports Christopher Jones who will also bowl the first ball of the cricket final.
A Lap race will be done by Agencies representatives who will part-take in the outing of the Torch.
Ministry spokesperson Alana Gaffar said the major benefits of this sports day is to bring cohesiveness amongst the staff of the different agencies since staff from the all the agencies participate.
“Of course playing sports helps you to create a healthy body and excellent mental health,” Gaffar added.
As of yesterday Miss Gaffar was in the process of getting National and West Indies batsmen Dr Shivnarine Chanderpaul or National Captain Leon Johnson to make a few remarks to the players and getting President of the Georgetown Cricket Umpires & Scores Association Arliegh Rutherford to assist with the Umpires for the cricket final.
GLDA, NAREI, MMA, HYDROMET ASDU, fisheries, GUYSUCO GRDB, GSA, NGMC, NDIA and Head Office are the Agencies involved. (Sean Devers)
