A post mortem conducted on the body of a 73-year-old pensioner of Number One Road, whose body was found floating in an Albion trench, revealed that she had compression to her neck and blunt trauma to the back of her head but died from drowning.
The autopsy was conducted by Government Pathologist Nehaul Singh at the Anthony’s Funeral Home, West Coast Berbice.
Shamdai Persaud’s body was discovered by passersby in the Albion Estate trench on Wednesday at approximately 16:30 hrs. Persaud had left her home alone, sometime around 10:00 am Tuesday to visit the Port Mourant Hospital for her regular medical check-up. However, after the entire day and evening passed, relatives grew worried and posted a missing person notice via social media. A missing person report was filed shortly after at the Albion Police Station. The woman, who relatives claim suffered from seizures and had a heart condition, was not known to wander off and spend extended hours out, hence their concern.
Their worst fears became a reality the very next day when they received information that a body fitting the description of Persaud was discovered partly submerged in the Albion trench. Her son, Hemnarine Persaud, 52 and other relatives ventured to the scene where her body was positively identified.
Meanwhile, the Commander of ‘B’ Division Paul Langevine told the media after several calls to him throughout the afternoon that he still was not briefed on the matter and could not provide any details on the incident including the post mortem details.
Investigations are in progress.
