Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo has accused Government of soliciting Trinidadian minds to help shape Guyana’s future as an oil-producing country, while ignoring local talent.
At a press conference held on Thursday last at his Church Street Office, Jagdeo told the media, “I am concerned that the agreement sets up a technical working group. Imagine, we do not have a technical working group in our Parliament to look at the future of our oil and gas industry but we can sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a joint technical working group with another country. It just shows how we value or how we do not value our own people’s opinions.”
Jagdeo then lamented that a specific Term of Reference for the joint group is to look at local content legislation and what kind of projects we must pursue.
“Are we farming out intellectual work to Trinidad and Tobago again? Are we doing this when our own people have views on this matter and we have some of the best minds in the world right here in Guyana or in the Diaspora that we can use?
Jagdeo was keen to note that he does not have a problem “with us working with Trinidad and Tobago.”
However, he said that it seems “as though we signed a lopsided agreement without looking at all of Guyana’s interests.”
“We are prepared to establish bodies with Trinidad and Tobago that we are unprepared to establish in our own country to allow participation of our people and we are farming our intellectual work to another country when our own people are capable of dealing with it. This seems to be this whole exercise. So yes, it is a sellout; it is a sellout.”
Jagdeo said too, “But I made it clear that I do not want this to be seen as a war between Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago. Trinidad and Tobago is an important country in our Region. We need to work with Trinidad and Tobago. But this is all about how government represents our interest. I must say I am very, very disappointed.”
