Chantoba Bright will be in action in the National College Athletics Championship later in the month.
The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) will be hosting the Inaugural National College Athletics Championships (NCAC) on July 21, 2018 at the National Track & Field stadium. This event, as coined by the AAG, has become very necessary as a step towards improving athletes’ performances in Regional and International competitions.
The transition of athletes over the years from junior to senior competition has always been a challenge for all stakeholders. The council of the AAG is of the firm opinion that this championship, which targets students of tertiary institutions and sixth form students of CAPE Schools, is major in the success of this transition. These participants will allow the AAG a wider choice of talent available to represent Guyana.
Twenty-five institutions and schools have been identified in all ten regions and invited to participate in this historic championship. These have been put into four zones with each institution within the zone competing in the preliminary stage. Those competitors who qualify will then have the opportunity to participate in the final as scheduled.
The Organising Committee which includes Aubrey Hutson (head of the AAG), Lavern Fraser, Buster Wright, Mayfield Taylor-Trim, Nicholas Fraser, Kenisha Headley, Nadine Trotz, Mondale Smith, Feiona Singh-Wordsworth, James Cole and Gervy Harry, is in the process of confirming participants, dates and venues of preliminary competitions. Corporate Guyana is expected to provide much needed sponsorship to ensure the success of the NCAC. Several prospective sponsors have been engaged toward this end. The Ministry of Education, thru the Chief Education Officer has given its blessings in recognition of providing support to the AAG in its continued quest of realizing its mandate.
Institutions confirmed for the meet include, Linden Technical Institute (LTI), University of Guyana, St. Rose’s High School and Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE). Among the top athletes billed for participation are Emmanuel Archibald, Ruth Sanmoogan, Owen Adonis, Chantoba Bright and Tramaine Beckles.
