ineteen-year-old Calvin George of 859 Grove, East Bank Demerara was yesterday committed to stand trial in the High Court by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
George is accused of attempting to murder Orwin Peters, whom he allegedly stabbed several times to his abdomen after an argument.
George was not required to plead to the charge which alleged that on April 11, last, at Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, with intent to commit murder, he unlawfully wounded Orwin Peters.
The Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the offence concluded yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The Chief Magistrate ruled that after revision of the evidence, which was led by Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers, the court was of the opinion that a prima facie case had been established against the accused.
The Magistrate added that she relied on the evidence given to the court by the prosecution witnesses, which was sufficient to build a strong case against the accused.
According to reports, on the day in question, the victim and the accused who are known to each other had an argument after George allegedly used his toilet, which is situated in the victim’s yard.
As a result of the argument, George became annoyed and armed himself with a knife and dealt the victim several stabs to his abdomen.
The victim was picked up by public-spirited persons and was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he underwent surgery.
George is currently out on $150,000 bail, pending the outcome of the trial in the High Court.
He will stand trial at the next practical sitting of the Demerara Assizes.
