President David Granger will today receive the Certificate of Completion for the refurbished Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC), at its Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara location.
The conference centre, according to the Ministry of Public Telecommunications, was a gift from the government of the People’s Republic of China.
The completely renovated facility will be “handed back to the people of Guyana” by Chinese Ambassador, Cui Jianchun.
“Minister of Public Telecommunications, Catherine Hughes, under whose portfolio the ACCC falls, will also officiate during the ceremony, and assist with a special dedication. Attendees will then be guided on a tour to view the new features added to the already popular conference and events venue. The ACCC had acquired an excellent reputation ten years,” the ministry said.
The first agreement was signed in 2004 by representatives of the Governments of the Republics of Guyana and China. Two years later the finished building, then called the Guyana International Convention Centre, was presented to the Government of Guyana.
That agreement contained a commitment by the Chinese Government to rehabilitate the facility after 10 years of use. That period expired in 2016 and the centre was closed for repairs on December 1st of that year.
The civil contractors, China Railway 17 Bureau Group Co. Ltd., completely renovated the buildings from the ground up within the agreed 18-month time-span, the ministry said.
