Dear Editor,
There was a letter published in your Saturday’s edition entitled ‘Death of a child at Mabaruma Hospital’ penned by Peter Persaud. Based on what he mentioned about the death of a child, I’m certain if there was any truth to the matter, that a full investigation would be done.
What I beg to differ with is his statement in that same letter, ‘They (the people of Mabaruma) want to know what the purpose of Radio Mabaruma is; it seems to be a white elephant.’
First of all, the death of a child has no logical link with Radio Mabaruma, reflecting poor writing ability. Secondly, I am certain that the position taken is his own opinion or that of one person, whomever he was communicating with, certainly not the people. He should seek to venture out especially in the riverine communities and get the views of the ‘people’.
Almost every household has a radio. They are now in tune with what is happening nationally and even regionally.
The real radio listeners of Mabaruma, I’m sure will agree that the local programmes that run daily albeit for an hour or two are very informative and educational. I agree that more local broadcast time should be given; however, one has to understand that many of the broadcasters are permanent government workers who have full time jobs.
For him to say that it seems to be a “white elephant” is certainly a speculation that is not taken kindly by us, the avid radio listeners. I am not certain who this individual is, but his keen interest in Region One seems to show that he has the Region at heart, maybe he should consider taking up a permanent job with the Radio Station and paint the elephant grey.
In closing, I must extend thanks to the Government for this initiative of bringing radio to the homes of residents of Mabaruma and I encourage the local broadcasters to continue doing the good job they are doing, things can only get better.
A. Daniels
