Dear Editor,
It brings immense anger to see labourers brought from India who have been subjected to such inhumane treatment in Guyana. Thanks to the leader of the opposition, the entire sordid affair has been brought to the Nation’s attention. Someone with strong government ties has been exploiting our brothers from India causing them to plea for help to be removed from our shores and returned to India after one of their brothers died while working for a Guyanese businessman.
CRG extends sincere condolences to the family and friends of the victim. The Indian migrants have also complained bitterly about their working conditions in a video posted on Facebook and they have even pleaded for the President of India to intervene on their behalf.
If the allegations are true, the PPPC should be ashamed of what is taking place. It is a diplomatic nightmare and can result in a serious rift between our people. First there was the insult with the offer of an insignificant amount of acreage for India to develop within our country, and now we have the mistreatment of workers that has come to light just after remembrance of Indian Arrival Day. Remembrance of a time of indentureship that was filled with the mistreatment of our ancestors.
Shame on the PPPC and shame on the business involved. We are not going back to being mistreated by any official or person in authority. The people of our nation must make it very clear that enough is enough and we have had it with the behaviour of the PPPC. They must be punished and they must be voted out of office. Maybe then they will acknowledge the wrong they have done and eventually correct their ways. The Jagans must be turning in their graves. Shame on those allowing this level of disrespect and mistreatment to take place especially after knowing the hardships that our ancestors went through when they came to these shores. Shame on the PPPC!
With utmost disgust,
Mr. Jamil Changlee
