Dear Editor,
The recent public statement by the “acting Mayor of Linden that the economic struggles of our township are directly linked to the removal of the Wismar/Mackenzie Bridge toll is both regrettable and profoundly irresponsible”. Such a sweeping claim by the chief citizen was advanced without the presentation of any empirical evidence, financial analysis, or measurable economic indicators to substantiate the allegation. It is an expectation that Public officials entrusted with leadership responsibilities owe the people honesty, accountability, and fact-based discourse rather than politically convenient narratives designed to deflect from institutional failures. The challenges confronting Linden today cannot credibly be reduced to the removal of bridge tolls. The real issues facing our municipality stem from years of weak governance, poor strategic planning, ineffective execution of policies or lack thereof, and the absence of visionary leadership within the Linden Mayor and Town Council. Residents of Linden continue to experience a consistent declining of municipal services, deteriorating infrastructure, poor environmental management, and inadequate urban development planning. These realities are not the consequence of toll removal, but rather the result of persistent administrative shortcomings.
It is also important to note the glaring disconnect between the mayor’s position and the sentiments of ordinary residents of Linden. Interestingly, since the removal of the bridge toll, there has been no widespread public outcry from vehicle owners or daily commuters opposing a toll-free bridge. On the contrary, many citizens including those who supported for the mayor and his council at the last electoral polls have publicly and quietly welcomed the financial relief and convenience that this measure provides, even if only in a modest way. This reality further undermines the attempt to portray the toll removal as the principal source of Linden’s economic challenges.
Equally concerning is the continued absence of transparency and accountability regarding the recently concluded Linden Town Week celebrations. The people of Linden are still awaiting a comprehensive financial report detailing revenues collected, sponsorships received, expenditures incurred, and the overall economic impact of the activities. Transparency in public affairs is not optional; it is a fundamental obligation of local government.
For far too long, Linden Town Week has represented a missed developmental opportunity. Instead of utilizing the platform to reposition Linden as a destination for tourism, commerce, logistics, sports tourism, industrial expansion, and investment, the municipality has largely confined the celebration to ceremonial activities with little long-term economic benefit to the township. A modern and forward-looking municipality must think beyond entertainment and focus on economic transformation.
Linden possesses enormous untapped potential. Its strategic location, gateway access to the hinterland, rich natural environment, sporting culture, and industrial possibilities position it uniquely for investment and regional development. Town Week should therefore serve as a platform to attract investors, engage the diaspora, promote tourism products, showcase local entrepreneurship, and facilitate strategic partnerships that stimulate economic growth and employment opportunities for our people.
I have always maintained that infrastructure and public policy must serve as instruments of empowerment and development rather than barriers to mobility and economic participation. The future prosperity of Linden cannot depend on dependency-driven models or the collection of burdensome tolls. Sustainable development will come through innovation, entrepreneurship, investment promotion, youth empowerment, tourism development, and strategic economic diversification.
What Linden requires at this moment is not rhetoric rooted in pessimism and blame, but leadership grounded in vision, competence, accountability, and transformational thinking. The people of Linden deserve a municipality that inspires confidence, attracts opportunities, and pursues development with seriousness and purpose.
Regards,
Jermaine Figueira
