The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) came in for high praises from the Secretary-General of the World Customs Organisation (WCO), Kunio Mikuriya, for its “determined” efforts at modernization.
In a letter of appreciation for the hospitality extended to him during his recent mission in Guyana, GRA said that Mikuriya acknowledged “the progress made to date in terms of information technology and partnership with the business community.”
“Rest assured that the World Customs Organisation (WCO) remains available to provide appropriate advice and assistance where required… I look forward to further enhancing the cooperation between the WCO and GRA…” Mr Mikuriya remarked in the letter addressed to the GRA’s Commissioner-General, Godfrey Statia.
Mikuriya, who has been the sitting WCO Secretary-General since 2009, was in the company of Sharon Davies, Technical Attaché, Capacity Building Directorate during an assessment tour of the GRA on March 19 and March 20, 2018.
The purpose was to review the GRA’s needs and priorities, particularly in the field of human resource development, risk management and post clearance audit.
The course of the visit also included a guided tour of wharves, the scanner operation site and the Entry Processing Unit.
The WCO recently completed a Mercator Programme Scoping Mission to Guyana identifying key areas of Customs operations where GRA could benefit from WCO’s assistance.
