A carpenter who violated a seven-year-old child by having sex with her back in 2014 has been jailed for 65 years.
The man Krishna Tulapersaud, 30, a carpenter of Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara was handed the sentence by Justice Sandil Kissoon in the Berbice High Court after he was found guilty by a mixed jury.
The case for the prosecution as presented by Attorney-at-law Tuanna Hardy, was that during February 2014, at a village on the West Coast Berbice, the predator engaged in sexual penetration of a girl under the age 12 years.
It was revealed that the child’s mother knew of the abuse but did nothing. It was discovered that on one occasion she saw the accused naked. There was also a bloodstained sheet and mattress. Blood was also on her daughter’s private parts. Nothing was reported.
However, during May 2015 an observant teacher noticed the child frequenting the bathroom. On May 28, 2015, the teacher decided to question the child and received some startling revelations.
The child related that the accused Tulapersaud would sleep with her in her bed in the evenings. The man would fondle her breast and vagina and reportedly had sex with her. On most occasions when she awoke, she would find the accused either holding her breast and vagina. On one occasion when she awoke, she was bleeding.
The teacher reported the matter to the headmistress and the police and Welfare Department were notified.
The child was taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital and a medical certificate which was issued by Dr . Alexander Sinclair, stated that the child was sexually active.
However, Defence Counsel Attorney-at-law Charrandas Persaud in his submission stated that his client is not guilty. He stated that the accused was only charged as a matter of revenge, after the relationship between him and the victim’s mother went sour.
Among those testifying were the victim, her mother, medical practitioner Dr. Alexander Sinclair, a police officer, a teacher of the school and a Welfare Officer.
After the man was found guilty, he was handed the 65 years sentence as a deterrent to those bent on committing such crimes.
