Three Guyanese have been admitted to the Women Deliver 2018 Class of Young Leaders.
Women Deliver is a global advocacy organization that works to generate political commitment and financial investment for fulfilling Millennium Development Goal 5—reducing maternal mortality and achieving universal access to reproductive health.
Those forming a part of the Guyana Delegation are Dennis Glasgow, Dr. Faqueeda Watson and Kobe Smith who are all advocates for sexual and reproductive health and women’s rights.
Throughout the year the trio will participate in an online university before travelling to Vancouver, Canada for the Women Deliver global conference.
They are among the 300 young people that will be attending the conference slated from June 3-6, 2019. This year’s programme received 3,000 applications for 300 spots.
It is also the largest and most diverse cohort to join the award-winning programme: the group hails from 121 countries and collectively speaks 98 languages.
The Young Leaders also include people from communities too often marginalized, including 66 people affected by humanitarian emergencies, 29 self-identified indigenous persons, and — for the first time — 18 adolescents. The young leaders were selected for their potential to have a lasting impact on the lives of girls and women.
As a group, they have already driven tangible progress on a wide range of issues, including sexual and reproductive health and rights, LGBTQ+ rights, peace and security, water and sanitation, gender-based violence, education, maternal health, and political participation.
According to womendeliver.org, “The fifth triennial Women Deliver global conference – will come at a time when the global terrain for girls and women continues to shift, as progress in health, education, and economic participation of women is threatened by conservative forces who want to scale back women’s rights and ability to decide on their own bodies and lives.”
“The choice of Canada as a location of the 2019 conference – a country that continues to prioritize gender equality – will send a signal to the world that investing in the health, rights, and wellbeing of girls and women is not optional, but foundational to catalytic reform and progress for all.”
Thus far, the Women Deliver conferences have been held in London, Kuala, Washington, Lumpur and Copenhagen.
