The PPP lost state power in 2015, therefore there have been three presentations at the BabuJaan death anniversary of CheddiJagan since then. Since then there hasn’t been one instance in which any of the speakers that addressed the gathering explained to Berbicians that mistakes were made in the 23 years of PPP’s rule. Readers should note; not one.
Analysts can assess what the speakers said. What cannot be analyzed is the reaction of Berbicians who sat and listened to the utterly nasty deceptions that have been heaped upon them in those three years. This is because they do not get up and ask questions; not that there is a format that allows for that. But even if there was, would they have done that?
The PPP’s long held disrespect for Berbicians continues based on what was said at BabuJaan two Sundays ago. The reason for such contempt could be obtained in any psychology textbook. When voters and supporters of powerful rulers become intoxicated with their leaders, these powerful leaders take them for granted. That is a natural human trait.
A Pavlovian reaction is expected so rulers inculcate an instinct of disinterest; they know because of race, culture or other factors that embrace will always be there. The supporters end up losing badly because they are taken for granted. This has been the story of Berbice and the PPP and it is a sad and tragic one that could come to an end if Berbicians awake from their sad, permanent sleep.
In modern countries such a Pavlovian response does not last long when rulers are exposed as deceptive. Donald Trump is a most graphic example. Mr. Trump is a multi-billionaire who favours big business. But he preached salvation to working class Americans and won the election because of handsome votes from working class districts all over the US.
But he cannot deliver redemption to their economic life because he is not that kind of politician and he has no interest in shaping US policies to benefit low income people. Already his tax policies are benefitting super companies. Poll after poll has shown that Trump is losing support from such classes of people that voted for him. Since he came to power a year ago, most of the state elections and congressional by-elections have been lost by candidates that Trump backed.
This is a lesson Berbicians should have learnt in 2015. They sat and listened for another year to the shamelessly horrifying deceptions of the PPP leaders, one of which was a promise of constitutional reform. As Jagdeo spoke to Berbicians, he knew that the next day, that is Monday, his court case (yes his, as you will see in the next few lines) will be heard in the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) whereby Jagdeo will be seeking to overturn a positive and beautiful change that was made to the 1980 constitution – a president can only serve two terms.
I said above it is Jagdeo’s case. He is behind the court proceeding. If Berbicians want to fool themselves as they have been doing before two-thirds of Guyana’s population was born then that is their right. Berbice should examine these bright, glowing, naked facts.
One- Jagdeo said he accepts term limits and will not run again. Two – the man who brought the case is of unknown status living in a very small house in south Georgetown without a known place of occupation. Why would this fellow be interested in removing a positive clause like term limits? He is a front.
Three – one of the lawyers in the case told me on the High Court balcony as a response to my question that his fee was good. By good he obviously meant large; he was one of two lawyers.
Where did such large sums come from to pay these two lawyers? And do you think Jagdeo does not know who is financing this case that was first fought in the High Court, then the Court of Appeal? We come now to the barefaced nonsense of Jagdeo that Berbician needs to open their eyes to see.
Four – the matter is being heard as I write in the CCJ and three top lawyers are presenting the case for the unknown gentleman who originally filed the motion. In Guyana dollars, those three lawyers will be collecting millions.
Are Berbicians so stupid to believe that Jagdeo is not involved? Berbicians have to accept that Jagdeo and the PPP are gone. They are not coming back into power. Berbicians have to make peace with themselves, their families, their country and their God by recognizing that fact.
