June ain’t got monopoly on brides no more!
(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh once upon a time, if yuh hear wedding bells ringing, chances are it was June. June used to be known as de month of brides. Back then, people used to treat June like it had some exclusive licence to issue marriage certificates. If yuh didn’t get married in June, society would look at yuh funny, like yuh buying Christmas ham in August.
Nobody quite know how June get dat reputation. Some seh it come from old European customs. Others seh it was because de weather nice and flowers blooming. In Guyana, dem boys suspect people simply because some people feel June bridges does be lucky.
But times changing.
Nowadays, people getting married whenever dem bank account and vacation leave line up. Romance still important, but it got competition. De first question ain’t, “Do you love me?” De first question is, “How much de reception hall charging?”
Dem boys seh June lose it crown because modern couples got a different calendar. Valentine’s Day weddings. Christmas weddings. Easter weddings. Mashramani weddings. Some people getting married on de same day de airlines got cheap tickets.
One man tell dem boys he get married in September because de photographer offer a discount. He seh love is eternal but bargains don’t last long.
And wedding itself ain’t what it used to be. Long ago, people spend months planning one wedding. Today, some people planning wedding, honeymoon, gender reveal, baby shower and divorce contingency plan all at de same time.
Besides, June got plenty competition. It sharing de spotlight with Father’s Day, school examinations and dem uncle and aunty wah paying fuh half de wedding getting leave during de early summer.
So, while June may still be de traditional month of brides, it ain’t got no monopoly anymore. These days, love follows its own timetable. Cupid done throw away de calendar and de diary. He firing arrows year-round.
And as one philosopher tell dem boys: “Marriage may be made in heaven, but de wedding date does get decided by availability at de reception hall and whether de seamstress gan finish de dress.”
