Dear Editor,
I was appalled to read Member of Parliament and Alliance for Change Executive, Mr Charrandass Persaud’s Facebook’s comments which appeared in an article published by the Guyana Times on March 11, 2018. Mr Persaud’s call for sugar workers – many, now jobless and in despair – to be charged for not being able to send their children to school this, really, says a lot about him as a person.
The MP’s insensitivity and his clear lack of empathy for his fellow citizens has caused me to wonder whether he is ‘fit and proper’ to be seated in the hallowed chamber of the National Assembly.
Mr Persaud should know that no parent would want to prevent their child or children from going to school and becoming educated. The fact that families in our country have to take such a difficult decision is heart-wrenching. But the reality is that the Government, of which Mr Persaud is an MP, brought about this situation by inconsiderately taking away thousands of jobs in the sugar industry.
Today Mr Persaud, these workers have no one to lean on, nowhere to go and nothing to get. They and their families are committed to a miserable existence and an uncertain future. The MP’s adding insult to injury is completely out of place and he should hang his head in shame.
Yours faithfully,
Liebert Alleyne
