An elderly couple is now forced to live with relatives after a fire gutted their two-storey wooden home at Lot 6 Company Path, Yarrow Dam, Georgetown.
The fire, of unknown origin began at about 10:00hrs yesterday and is said to have started at the upper flat. The couple, Herman and Geeta Norton, who are both said to be in their 60s, was unable to save any household appliances or furniture from the uninsured home.
Neighbours, however, said that Herman managed to save a bicycle, which they say, is the man’s “hand and foot.”
This publication was told that the man and his wife had just returned home from visiting the doctor. Soon after, a loud noise was heard from the upper flat and the house was quickly swallowed by flames.
However, quick action by the Guyana Fire Service prevented the fire from spreading to nearby houses.
When Kaieteur News arrived at the scene, firefighters, with the use of two fire tenders, had already put out the blaze. Residents in the area were in high praise of the firefighters, who they said did a good job in ensuring that other homes were not scorched. Apart from the firefighters, neighbours also assisted in quelling the blaze with a bucket brigade. Efforts to speak with Herman proved futile.
When a reporter from this publication greeted the man and inquired about the fire, he said, “I fed up talk.”
A relative of the man said that Herman and his wife have been living in the home for almost all their life.
When questioned about where the couple will stay until they are able to rebuild, the relative disclosed that he has no problem with sheltering them until such time, adding that other relatives are willing to offer assistance.
In the meantime, the relative is grateful that the Nortons escaped unhurt.
