A weeping Troy Jackson’s freedom was snatched away after a 12-member mixed jury found him guilty of engaging in sexual activity with a child under age 16.
Prior to the conviction, Jackson had been released on bail pending trial.
The trial was presided over by Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall at the High Court in Georgetown. The trial concluded yesterday when the jury returned with a majority guilty verdict in a 10-2 proportion.
The charge against Jackson stated that on October 16, 2016, in the county of Demerara, he engaged in sexual activity with a seven year-old girl.
Reports are that Jackson took out his penis and placed it at the little girl’s vagina. Before Jackson could have uttered a word to the court in his defence, he was advised by the trial judge to remain silent since his Attorney, Adrian Thompson, was not present. It was reported to the court that the lawyer was engaged in another matter at the Court of Appeal. Nevertheless, sentencing for the convict was adjourned until this morning, when Thompson will make a plea in mitigation on his client’s behalf.
The case for the state was presented by Prosecutors Seeta Bishundial, Narissa Leander and Orinthia Schmidt.
