A Baramita, North West District man who was recently shot twice by a policeman after he allegedly made an advance towards him with a cutlass was on Thursday remanded to prison on three unlawful wounding charges.
Twenty-six-year-old Ruben Baird appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The first charge alleged that on February 24 at Williams Area, Baramita, North West District, he unlawfully assaulted Jerry James, so as to cause him actual bodily harm.
It was further alleged that on February 25 at the same location, he unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm on Ruby Alanzo. And a third charge alleged that on February 26, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Alanzo.
Baird denied all the allegations as they were read to him by the Magistrate.
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore strongly objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing the serious nature of the offence.
The prosecutor told the court that the defendant, when under the influence of alcohol, would normally attack his fellow villagers. He added that on the day in question the virtual complainants were at home when the defendant rushed towards them and dealt them several lashes about their body with an object.
The matter was reported and when two police ranks were in the process of arresting him, he attempted to chop one of the ranks and was shot once in the right foot.
It was reported that after the defendant was shot, he continued to advance towards the rank who shot him, and the said rank instinctively discharged another round which struck him again in the right foot. He was then disarmed and rushed to the Baramita Heath Centre where he was treated for his injuries.
The prosecutor’s objection was upheld by the Magistrate and the defendant was remanded to prison. He was instructed to make his next court appearance on March 5.
