Senior Magistrate Dylon Bess yesterday sentenced a Gospel promoter to three years and six months imprisonment and fined him $500,000 for trafficking 834 grams of marijuana.
The matter was heard in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Thirty-one-year-old Trinidadian Cornelius Thomas was jailed. It is alleged that on May 28, at Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, Thomas had the marijuana in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
According to reports, ranks acting on information received went to a house at Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, where they conducted a search in the defendant’s presence. They reportedly found the marijuana in small Ziploc packets in the refrigerator.
Magistrate Bess, in coming to his decision told the court that the three witnesses called by Police Prosecutor Christopher Morris, evidence were all credible.
He added that based on the evidence he is of the opinion that Thomas had control of the narcotics and he did give the police a caution statement accepting ownership of the narcotics which was found in his refrigerator.
Magistrate Bess further outlined the fact that prosecutor Morris was able to prove his case beyond reasonable doubt and the three witnesses gave solid evidence in the matter against Thomas.
When Thomas was asked if he had anything to say to the court he stated, “Your Worship I would like to spend my sentence in the Lusignan prison and not Camp Street because I am fearful for my life.”
The magistrate ordered that Thomas spend his sentence either at the Lusignan or the Mazaruni Prison.
Failure to pay the fine, Thomas will spend an additional six months imprisonment.
