– then escapes from police station
An unemployed drunken teenager went on a rampage on last Friday, beating his bedridden stepfather and burning a quantity of clothing belonging to his mother before jumping over a counter at the inquiries section of the Acuario Police Station and making good his escape.
Calais Rodrigues, 18, of Moruka, North West District, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, yesterday and pleaded guilty to charges of escaping from lawful custody; damage to property and unlawful and malicious wounding.
Rodrigues admitted that on October 6, last, at Acquero Police Station, being in lawful custody pending criminal charges, he escaped from the said custody. He further admitted that on October 6, at Santa Rosa Village, Moruka, he damaged a quantity of clothing valued $21,000—property of Samantha Abraham, his mother.
Rodrigues also confessed to unlawfully and maliciously wounding his stepfather, Martin Abraham, who is bedridden, on the same day.
Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan reprimanded Rodrigues and discharged the matter for escaping from lawful custody. In relation to the charges of damage to property and unlawful and malicious wounding, Rodrigues was sentenced to perform three months of community service at the Acquero Police Station three days per week. Failure to adhere will see him spending three months in jail.
In addition, Rodrigues was ordered to undergo 12 months of counseling for alcohol abuse under the supervision of a probation officer.
In his address to the court Rodrigues said, “I was frustrated and didn’t know what to do. I was under the influence of alcohol and I didn’t mean to do it. I’m just begging for a second chance and I promise I would never do it again.”
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore told the court that Rodrigues resides with his mother and stepfather at Santa Rosa Village, Moruka.
Prosecutor Moore said that on the day in question, Rodrigues went home under the influence of alcohol.
According to the prosecutor, Rodrigues armed himself with a length of iron pipe and dealt his stepfather, who is bedridden as a result of suffering a stroke, several lashes about the body.
Prosecutor Moore disclosed that Martin was taken to the hospital and was issued with a medical certificate which revealed that he sustained wounds to his left side chest and chin. There was swelling. The prosecutor said that the injuries are not life threatening.
The prosecutor said that Sonia went to the police station to make a report of the incident.
But when she returned home she discovered that a quantity of her clothing was burnt in the house.
Rodrigues was arrested and taken to the police station.
However, while there, he jumped over a counter at the Inquiries Section and made good his escape.
He was later apprehended by police and taken back into custody.
Prosecutor Moore disclosed that charges were recommended for Rodrigues by the Police Legal Adviser Justice Claudette Singh.
