A serving member of the Guyana Police Force, who was allegedly found with a weapon and ten live rounds belonging to the force in his pants crotch, yesterday made an appearance in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to a
charge of simple larceny.
Twenty-one-year-old Kevon Johnson of Lot 16 Public Road Hague, West Coast Demerara, appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman and denied the charge, which alleged that on August 27, at the Tactical Service Unit (TSU), Police Headquarters, Eve Leary, he stole a 9mm pistol valued $375,000 and ten live rounds of ammunition, property of the Guyana Police Force.
The defendant was represented by Attorney-at-law Melvin Duke who asked that reasonable bail be granted to his client.
The lawyer told the court that his client has been a serving member in the Guyana Police Force for the past three years and his wife is seven months pregnant.
The lawyer added that since the incident his client was placed on close arrest and it was only on October 5 that he was placed on open arrest and told to make an appearance in court.
Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves had no objection to bail being granted to the defendant. Facts presented by the prosecutor stated that on the day in question ranks, acting on information went to Den Amstel, West Coast Demerara, where they made contact with the defendant who was under a shed gambling with four friends.
The court heard that a physical search was conducted on the defendant and the gun and ammunition were found in his pants crotch.
The prosecutor told the court that after the defendant was arrested, he admitted that he found the gun along with the ammunition in a cupboard when he was taking out a pair of boots.
Magistrate Latchman then ordered the defendant to post bail in the sum of $200.000. He was then instructed to make his next court appearance on October 27.
