Round of 16 action got underway at the Victoria Community Centre ground on Sunday night in the Hamilton Green Cup, knockout football tournament with a triple header from 17:00hrs. Den Amstel defeated Golden Grove 2-0, while Soesdyke Falcons upset Mahaica Determinators 4-2 and Ann’s Grove needled Buxton 1-0 in an all East Coast match up to cap off the night’s play.
Morgan Denny (7th minute) and Vivian Payne (52nd minute) were the goal scorers for Den Amstel in their easy 2-0 victory over Golden Grove football club that is based less than 5 minutes from the Victoria ground.
Soesdyke Falcons overturned a 2- goal deficit in the first half for a 4-2 come from behind victory against favourites Mahaica Determinators. Eon Abel fired Determinators ahead in the 2nd minute of the game and when Kirk Roberts doubled their lead in the 14th minute the East Demerara team would’ve believed they were in the clear for a victory. However, Falcons rallied back and scored 4 unanswered goals through Colin McLean in the 39th minute, Orin Josha with a double in the 60th and 78th minutes and John Gordon in the 70th.
In the final match on Sunday, Ann’s Grove edged Buxton thanks to Phillip Williams’s solitary strike.
The tournament resumes next Sunday with a triple header at the Georgetown Football Club ground from 17:00hrs.
The fixtures are set with Santos tackling Uitvlugt in the first match. The second matchup begins at 19:00hrs when city side Western Tigers will look to knockout Milerock of Linden.
The feature match at 21:00hrs will see home side GFC against Eagles United.
Competition then returns to Linden the following day, Monday, with two matches. Police FC will match skills with Silver Shattas, while Riddim Squad will play Winners Connection at 21:00hrs, both games at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.
