The Japanese Government through its Grassroots Human Security Programme (GGP) which offers grant funding to NGO’s and other non-profit organizations in the Eastern Caribbean and Guyana, recently held a closing ceremony for two education/special needs projects completed in St. Ignatius, Central Rupununi.
Through the aegis of the NGO Special Needs for Life Guyana, and its Principal Executive Officer, Mark Adams, two projects were funded for two entities including the Lethem Special Needs Group headed by Yusa Xavier.
The partnership resulted in the construction of a US$87,178 Multipurpose Centre at St. Ignatius and the St. Ignatius Secondary School Electrification Project at a cost of US$90,000.
The latter provided the school with solar panels, batteries, inverters and controllers to provide support for the school’s electricity supply and security lighting and a solar well to augment the water supply at the school.
These Projects were completed last year June and July. They have been well received by the target communities in the central Rupununi.
The Japanese emissary from the Embassy of Japan in Trinidad, which oversees the GGP in the eastern Caribbean, Mr. Shinichiro Kobayashi, expressed the pleasure of the Government and Peoples of Japan to be able to make a tangible contribution to the lives of grassroots Guyanese.
Mr. Kobayashi spoke well of the bilateral relations between his country and Guyana and the co-operation that ensues between the two governments. He emphasized that projects such as these bolster the strong ties that exist between Japan and Guyana.
Mr. Brian Allicock, the Region Nine Chairman, who was on hand to deliver guest remarks at the Ceremony, was profuse in his thanks to the Japanese for carrying out the two Projects in the Region and related to the timeliness of these interventions in the lives of the Central Rupununi community.
Yusa Xavier, the head of the Lethem Special Needs Group and also the Toshao of St. Ignatius, Kuma and Quarries in Region Nine, relayed the gratitude of the people who were beneficiaries of the two Projects.
She said that the communities are committed to ensuring that the Projects are well maintained and cherished.
Also on hand for the function, were Mr. O’Neil Wills – GGP Consultant in the Embassy of Japan Trinidad and Tobago; Mr. Tatsuya Morita of JICA in Guyana and Mark Adams, CEO of Special needs for Life Guyana.
