Dear Editor,
I read the recent piece about the chap without a stomach for over a quarter of a century and still able to function in a normal fashion. The titbit about oral rehydration salts (ORS) is worthy of being passed on to others who may have similar stomach problems, and now forms part of my ‘archives’.
Years ago in the UK, many TV food handlers did not appreciate the full value of the coconut. I was so shocked when I saw a well-known TV cook put a dried coconut in a transparent plastic food bag, bang it in the middle with a hammer, then pour the collected coconut water down the kitchen sink! Such ‘culinary wanton destruction’ caused me to write to the programme, lauding the value and properties of coconut water, by just straining the water and drinking it, perhaps with some chipped ice. Now, tinned or packaged coconut water is on the shelves of many chain supermarkets and on the menu of popular ‘upmarket’ restaurants.
Here, an amusing incident told to me by the late First Lady, Joyce Hoyte comes to mind. She said that on a State visit to a Third World country, her husband’s team had advised the organisers of the State dinner that the President’s favourite after dinner drink was coconut water. Lo and behold, at the end of dinner, there appeared in front of him a huge decanter of coconut MILK! Stunned, unprepared, he had to think quickly how to avoid upset, so asked for plain water instead, as he had already used up his quota of coconut liquid earlier that day. I shall be keeping a lookout for TV programmes and listening to the radio for discussions about stomach problems, to spread the gospel about ORS. All grist to the mill; it serves the purpose of keeping my head in working order.
