Youths benefit from training programme

The first annual three-week ‘Youth in Natural Resources Programme’ was launched last Monday with the intent of “introducing young people to the natural resources sector through the work of the Ministry and its agencies”

This launch was held in the Minister of Natural Resources Boardroom. With the help of this programme, youths will benefit from an education which will help them to appreciate that the natural resources sector can be beneficial and along with proper application, can also maintain “the environment and rich biodiversity.”
Participants of the programme, who are all ranged between 15 and 18, were taken on a tour of the Ministry, the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission, the Guyana Gold Board and the Guyana Forestry Commission.
Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman, in his address to participants, said they must develop a love for their country through exploration, and always remember that the hinterland population has to be taken into consideration during their drive to conserve and protect.
He went on to explain that although it is perceived that the natural resources extraction is negative due to its probability for degradation of the environment, the Ministry is working to bring a healthy balance between the extractive industries and the environment. The Minister said this programme will display that there is a high merit in the extractive industries and that the mining sector, along with other extractive activities, is an ethical endeavour, which will bring in foreign exchange and job opportunities.
“I hope that when you go out to these different places…like me you will fall in love with the country, wherever we go try to see the beauty of your country”. The participants were invited to offer assistance to the next batch of youths in the coming year.
The sponsors of the event, some of whom are MACORP, Farfan and Mendes, John Fernandes Ltd, Muneshwers Ltd, Guyana Goldfields, Bosai Mineral Group, ExxonMobil, the Iwokrama International Centre for Rainforest Conservation and Development, were given credit for responding positively to the Ministry and making the programme possible.
The programme will conclude on August 28th, 2017 and will include a tree-planting project as well as other community vocations.
