Lawrence Semple, the second pedestrian who was struck down by a car reportedly driven by a police constable on Sunday, has succumbed.
The 43-year-old man died at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) Monday night from injuries he sustained in the accident which occurred around 17:30 hrs on the Catherine Village, Mahaicony Public Road, East Coast Demerara.
Semple’s friend, 53-year-old Winston Small, who was also involved in the accident, died at the scene. Both victims are from Calcutta, Mahaicony—a short distance from where they were struck down.
Thirteen-year-old Jaden Alleyne of Calcutta, Mahaicony, was also struck off his bicycle, but he was lucky to escape with minor injuries.
The policeman, Jarren Huntley, is still hospitalized at the GPHC. The persons who were in his vehicle, Delroy Hutson, 35; Fitzroy Goodridge, 23 and Odari Reynolds, 23 were all treated and sent away.
The Guyana Police Force in a release said that investigations revealed that the vehicle, bearing registration number, PWW 1614, was proceeding east along the northern carriageway of the Public Road while Small, Lawrence and Alleyne were heading in the opposite direction.
It was further revealed that the driver reportedly swerved to avoid an uneven patch on the road and first collided with the teenager after which, he lost control of the car and struck down the two friends.
The vehicle then ended up in a church yard.
The policeman was reportedly speeding, based on the report traffic ranks received from eyewitnesses.
Yesterday, divisional commander, Calvin Brutus and senior officers visited the homes of the two deceased and spent a few minutes with their relatives.
