Three former employees of Medicare Pharmacy yesterday made an appearance before Chief
Magistrate, Ann McLennan, in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts after being charged with embezzling money from the company.
Twenty-three-year-old Vanwattie Ramnarine of Lot 259 Area D’Willem, West Coast Demerara and 20-year-old Celina Sookdeo of Lot 296 Old Road Goed Fortuin, both denied the charge which alleged that between September 6, 2016 and June 2, 2017 at Medicare Pharmacy, Georgetown, while being employed as a clerk or servant at the company they fraudulently embezzled $655,245, money taken into their possession in the name of or on the account for the company.
It was further alleged that 43-year-old Zalena Khan, of Lot 389 East Street North Cummingsburg and Vanwattie Ramnarine, both denied the charge which alleged that between May 4, 2016 and June 15, 2017 at Medicare Pharmacy, Georgetown while being employed as a clerk or servant at the company they fraudulently embezzled the sum of $1.6M, money taken in their possession in the name of or on the account for the company.
Ramnarine and Sookdeo were both represented by Attorney-at-law Marcia Sharma, who asked that her clients be released on reasonable bail since they have no previous or pending matter in any court.
The lawyer further told the court that Sookdeo is the sole breadwinner for her family, while Ramnarine is the mother of two.
Khan was represented by Attorney-at-law James Bond, who in his application to secure bail for his
client told the court that his client is the mother of two and that bail should be granted to her since she is not a flight risk and will return to court for the trial.
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore had no objection to bail being granted to the defendants but asked that conditions be attached.
Bail was set in the sum of $150,000 for each of the defendants. The magistrate ordered that the defendants report to the fraud section at the Brickdam Police Station every Friday until the completion of the trial.
The prosecutor said that the case file is still incomplete and the trio will make their next court appearance on August 4 for statements.
