The Hamilton Green Cup Knockout Football tournament will start on July 14, that’s next Friday,
with a double header at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) Ground in Linden starting from 7:00pm and Linden fans have been promised a treat.
Coordinator Lennox Arthur informed that the tournament is now a 24 team event and they will be battling for attractive prizes which include $500,000 and trophy for the winner, $250,000, $150,000 and $100,000 respectively for the other top three finishers.
Arthur made a call for corporate support, noting that without same sports and in this case football, would suffer. He is soliciting sponsors to come on board to ensure the success of the tournament even as the modalities for staging the event are put in place.
The former national footballer and Coach informed that a Linden team has never won the tournament when it was played under the Mayor’s Cup handle, and now would be an opportune time for the Lindeners to rise to the challenge and stake their claim to the accolade. The previous winners include Pele, Camptown, Alpha, Western Tigers, Conquerors, Victoria Kings, Santos, Slingerz and Police. A number of the country’s leading players would be on show throughout the tournament and fans are promised a treat.
Four nights of the tournament have been slated for the MSC ground in Linden starting with opening night next Friday. Home side Milerock will open their account against Kuru Kururu, while Silver
Shattas, also of Linden, take on Soesdyke. More action has been fixed for the Mining Town on July 26, 28 and August 18.
After opening night, action continues on Sunday July 16 at the Victoria ground on the East Coast of Demerara with three games starting at 4:00pm. Golden Grove face Riddim Squad, Mahaicony tackle Grove Hi Tech and Buxton Bakewell battle Pele.
Only clubs and players affiliated to their respective associations will be allowed to participate in the knockout tournament. Matches will be the usual 90 minutes with 20 minutes (two halves of 10) extra time being used to separate a deadlock; failing which, penalty kicks and if necessary sudden death kicks will be employed. Players receiving two yellow cards will be suspended for one match. Serious offences will be dealt with by the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Disciplinary Committee.
The tournament has already received full permission from the GFF.
The final of the tournament has been fixed for the Leonora Sports Facility for Sunday August 27.
