A businessman was yesterday remanded to prison after he appeared before City Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to the charge of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Freeman Fordyce, 39, of Lot 99 Collingswood Avenue, Nandy Park, East Bank Demerara, denied the allegation which stated that he, on May 5, at George and Princes Street, Georgetown, had in his possession one Smith and Wesson 9mm pistol without being a licensed firearm holder at the time.
It was further alleged that on the same day he had in his possession 15 live rounds of 9mm ammunition without being the holder of a firearm licence.
The proprietor of a Jewellery Pawn Shop was represented by Attorney-at-Law Nigel Hughes who in his application to secure bail for his client told the court that his client has been a successful businessman for many years.
Hughes told the court that on the day in question his client was visited by members of the Guyana Police Force who conducted a search at his business where the gun and ammunition where found on the premises.
However facts presented by Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves stated that on the day in question a party of policemen went to the business place of the defendant where a search was conducted.
It was when a physical searched was done on the businessman it was discovered that he had one Smith and Wesson 9mm pistol along with 15 live 9mm ammunition concealed in his pants crotch.
The prosecutor objected to bail based on the serious nature of the offence and the prevalence and penalty the charge attracts.
Fordyce was remanded to prison and he will make his next court appearance on May 22.
