support for their schools’ introductory chess programme.
The visiting delegation consisted of President, James A. Bond, Vice President, Frankie Farley, National Coach, Wendell Meusa and Honorary Member, Errol Tiwari.
Those officials are targeting ten schools for the first phase of the pilot programme. Dr. Roopnaraine was extremely supportive of the initiative and indicated that his Ministry is delighted to be a part of the pilot programme.
Mr. Bond informed the Minister that the initiative envisages Chess being taught in ten schools, at least twice a week, by coaches affiliated to the GCF. The Ministry has been tasked with the selection of the pilot schools and will share the expenditure with the GCF.
Mr. Bond was indeed gratified and expressed such sentiments to the Minister, “My executive wish to place on record the overwhelming support we have received in realizing our vision and goals for the resuscitation of Chess in Guyana” he said.
He also singled out (Junior) Minister Nicolette Henry and Director of Sports, Christopher Jones, for their unswerving support. National Chess Coach, Wendell Meusa, was also very busy when he tutored three 13 year-old students of St. Stanislaus College in the intricacies of the sport.
They included Ghansham Allijohn, Jaden Taylor and Jessica Calendar. Subsequently, Minister Roopnaraine presented certificates to those players while wishing them the best in their future endeavors.
Meanwhile, the planning committee will commence its programme with the two days National Library Annual Kiddies Chess Championship commencing today and concluding on the 12th at National Library.
Further, the concentration of the sport across the regions will see officials staging a Junior Open Chess championship in the Ancient County, New Amsterdam, on May 19. Several other tournaments have also been planned for the months ahead.
